ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018

It gives me an immense pleasure to welcome all of you in this 18th Anniversary of our college. On behalf of management, Director, Principal, Staff and students I feel very proud to invite our today’s chief guest Dr.M.Valarmathi, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Vellore Region who has graciously accepted our invitation to be our chief guest of this happy and memorable day. I extend my warm and hearty welcome to the chief guest. It is my privilege to welcome the Respected Trustees of our Management, Director, esteemed guests, faculty members and my dear students. K.M.G. College of Arts & Science was established in the new millennium 2000 and the visionary was our philanthropist Shri.K.M.G Govindarasanar, the founder of Kunja Kowsalya Ammal Educational and Charitable Trust, Gudiyattam. His vision is to empower the economically poor, middle class and the needy students of this area by educating them to higher levels and make them fully employable and economically self reliant. The vision stated above is transformed into action by the progeny of our founder. With the initial strength of 196 in 2000 with five UG departments, our enrolment has increased to 2050 in this academic year 2017-2018. Now, the college is conducting 10 UG programmes, 8 PG programmes, 5 M.Phil Programmes, and 1 Ph.D programme.

It is my privilege and at the same time I am delighted to present the glimpses of the academic activities and achievements of our college during 2017-2018. I am very proud to announce that the NAAC peer team visited our college during September and our college has been accredited with B+ status.

STAFF PROFILE  :

We have strong band of faculty members. 59 staff members of our college produced 100% results in the University examination in the papers taught by them.

Dr.R.Manighandan Department of BBA, Dr.C.Srinivasan Department of Commerce, Dr.D.Shakila Head, Department of Chemistry, Dr.R.Maheswari Head, Department of Biochemistry, Dr.J.Thirumagal Department of Biochemistry and Dr.D.Manikandan Head, Department of Microbiology have been awarded Ph.D., degree in this year.

07 staff members have cleared the NET/SET examinations and 03 staff members have qualified for M.Phil Degree.

Staff members from various departments have published research articles in the relevant journals and magazines. We all congratulate them.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES :

In addition to regular activities, all the departments of our college have organized state level seminars by inviting experts in the respective disciplines to address our students. Students from various colleges affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University had an exposure to the recent trends in the respective subjects.

The list of activities of various departments during this academic year is as follows:

DEPARTMENT OF TAMIL:

  • A special meeting was held on 07.08.2017 on behalf of Tamil Literary Association. Dr.R.Jayaraman, HOD of Tamil Thiruvalluvar University addressed the gathering on “The life style described in Tamil Literature”.
  • To commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and our former president of India Dr.APJ Abdulkalam, various competitions have been conducted and Prizes were distributed to the winners.
  • Our II BCA student B.Priyanka took participation in the essay competition in the centenary birth anniversary celebration of Dr.M.G.R. the former chief minister TamilNadu. She won second prize at the district level.
  • The department celebrated National Voters Day on 25.01.2018. Elocution, Essay and Rangoli competitions were conducted. Winners were be given prizes by the District Collector.
  • All the faculty members of this department have produced 100% results in the University Examinations.

PG DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH :

  • English Literary Association is active in our college. It has conducted various competitions such as elocution, pencil sketch, calligraphy, tongue twisters, JAM short story writing and poetry writing.
  • Intercollegiate Literary fest ENGLISHIANA-2017 was organized on 12th August 2017. There were 254 students and 21 staff members from 14 colleges took part in the fest.
  • Our students participated in Inter Collegiate events organized by Islamiah Women’s College, Vaniyambadi on 5th October 2017 and won overall championship.

DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION :

  • The Department organized a state level seminar on “GST – A Boon for Indian Economy” on 11.08.2017. Mr.V. Prakash, Assistant Commercial Tax officer, West Assessment circle, Gudiyattam was the Chief guest. He gave a special lecture on “GST-Its impact on Indian Economy” 170 students and 15 faculty members from various colleges participated in the seminar. Paper presentation and mime show were also conducted as a part of the program.
  • The Department organized management games and conducted business quiz program for our students on 8th February 2018 to improve the technical knowledge and efficiency in the management concepts.

PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE:

  • The Department organized a National Seminar on 8th August 2017 on “Demonetization and its impact on Indian Economy” Dr.S.Mythili, Principal of Akilandeswari Women’s College, Vandavasi was the chief guest. She delivered a special lecture on this topic. More than 250 students from various colleges participated and were benefited by this seminar.
  • On 10th August 2017 a career development program was organized on “Company Secretaryship” Mr.S.N.Jayabalan, ICSI-SIRC student counselor, Chennai addressed the final year students.
  • On 2nd February 2018 another career development program was organized on “Financial Awareness for young investors” Mr.T.K. Sabu from SEBI delivered a special lecture on this topic to our final year students.
  • The department organized an Industrial visit to Doddabetta Tea factory in Nilgiris on 04.02.2018. Final year UG and PG students were benefitted by this visit.

PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND APPLICATIONS :

  • The Department organized an Inter-Collegiate IT-Meet/ Seminar titled I Blaze’17 on 9th August 2017. Mr.M.Karthick of ICT Academy, Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest and gave a special lecture on “Net Work security- Next generation fire walls”. 253 students from 18 colleges participated.
  • The department coordinates all the activities designed by the ICT Academy in the College. They are “Youth circle Program”, “Faculty development program”, “Youth summit-2017” and “Power seminar on network security”.
  • The department organized a Tour to Kodaikanal on 18.08.2017 for the final year students.
  • The department is conducting computer literacy program for non-computer students of our college and school students from the near rural villages.
  • An alumni meet was conducted on 01.10.2017. 125 students attended this program.
  • The Department organized an industrial visit for the PG students. They visited Zylog systems, Chennai. Students were benefitted through interaction with the project team members.

 PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS :

  • One day State level conference was organized on “Mathematical Analysis and Applications” in Math-2017. Dr.B.Srinivasan, Asst. Professor, Muthurangam Govt. Arts College, Vellore was the chief guest. He delivered a special lecture on the above topic. Paper presentation event was also conducted. Faculty members, Research scholars and students from various colleges took active part in this program.
  • On 22nd December 2017 the greatest Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan’s Birthday was celebrated as “National Mathematics Day”.
  • Our students participated in various intercollegiate competitions and won prizes at Loyola College of Arts & Science, Thiruvannamalai and Islamiah Women’s College, Vaniyambadi

PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY:

  • On 10th August 2017 the dept. organized a state level seminar on “Strategies in organic synthesis”. Dr.K.Subramani, Associate Professor, Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi, was the chief guest. He gave a special lecture on this topic. Poster presentation was also organized. Prof. P.Chakkaravarthy, Government Thirumagal Mills College, Gudiyattam was the judge in this program.
  • Our students participated in many intercollegiate programs and won many prizes from the various institutions.

 PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY :

  • The department organized a state level seminar on “ANTIOXIDANTS IN MEDICINAL PLANTS”.
  • K.M.Kumar, Senior Assistant Professor, Centre for R&D Life sciences, Dayanandasagar College, Bangalore, was the Resource Person. He gave a special lecture on this topic. Students from more than 10 colleges participated.
  • On 1st September 2017, the department in collaboration with NSS and YRC organized a one day camp in blood grouping and HB count at Ammanankuppam Village. The people were benefited by this camp.
  • Our students participated in various inter collegiate competitions and won first and second prizes from the Marudhar Kesari Jain College, Vaniyambadi.

PG DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY :

  • The department organized a state level seminar on 8th August 2017 on the topic “Stem Cell Technology”. Dr. M. Anbalagan Ph.D., HOD of Biotechnology VIT University, Vellore was the Chief Guest. He delivered a special lecture on the above topic. Students from various colleges participated and exhibited posters on the theme.
  • To create awareness and motivation among the students a quiz competition was conducted on 18.07.2017.
  • Our students participated in various intercollegiate competitions. They participated in the Inter collegiate program organized by the Bio-Technology department at Marudhar Kesari Jain College, Vaniyambadi on 12.10.2017 and Won the overall championship.
  • Our students visited Pasteur Institute at Coonoor on 22nd January and also visited Central Institute of Brackish water aquaculture on 20th October 2017 in Chennai to acquire proper knowledge in the field.

LIBRARY :

  • The library is an important source for learning. In our college library the number of text books bought during 2017-2018 is 541, E-Books – 308, National and International journals// Magazines 10. Thesis and back volumes have been added.

HEALTH CLUB :

  • An eye-screening camp was organized on 18.01.2018 and 19.01.2018 at K.M.G. Auditorium for the students and the staff members of our college in association with Agarwal eye Hospital, Vellore. Nearly 600 students, 100 teaching and non-teaching staff members got benefited by this camp.
  • The primary Health Centre of Pasumathur, along with our college Health club organized on awareness programme about “ National Deworming Day” on 26.02.2018. Our Principal and Director inaugurated the Programme. An awareness lecture was given by Health inspector Mr.Ravichandran and distributed dewoming tablet 1237 students of our Institution.
  • Health club co-ordinator Prof. S.Karthigaidevi, Asst. Prof, Department of Biochemistry, and members Prof. S.Chacko Vijay Sharma, Asst. Prof. Department of Microbiology and Prof. G.D.Sharmila Carolene, Asst. Prof. Department of Business Administration organized this programe.

N.S.S ACTIVITIES

Dr.C.Srinivasan Asst. Professor, Department of Commerce and Dr.J.Thirumagal, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry are the NSS programme officers.

  • Drug addiction awareness programme was held on 30.06.2017 in our college. Gudiyattam DSP Thiru.M.Prakashbabu delivered a special lecture to our students and auto drivers.
  • During this year, NSS has conducted two blood donation camps on different dates viz 25.07.2017 and 24.01.2018. Our students donated 100 units and 80 units respectively to Govt. Hospital, Gudiyattam and CMC Hospital, Vellore.
  • Operation clean money pledge was taken at our college on 31.12.2017, in presence of Dr.D.Dhanasekaran, Income Tax officer, Vellore.
  • TB awareness programme was conducted at our college on 07.12.2017. CMC Doctors gave the special lectures about the prevention and eradication of
  • An awareness programme on Dengue fever was conducted on 04.01.2018, Dr. Karthikeyan, Medical Officer, Primary Health Centre, Pasumathur delivered a special lecture along with suitable demonstration. Steps were also taken on that day to eradicate mosquitoes at the college campus by fumigating.
  • National Commission for women has completed 25 years of service and it is celebrating its ‘Silver Jubilee’ in this year. In order to commemorate this event and to create awareness among the public, a “Walkathon Rally” was organized on 20.01.2018 at Ammanankuppam Village.
  • A Special lecture was organized on the theme “Benefits of Blood donation” on 23.01.2018. Dr.M.Priya of CMC hospital addressed the students and clarified many doubts raised by the students.
  • Observing Anti Leprosy Day, a pledge was taken at Keelalathur Village on 30.01.2018 in the presence of Mr.S.Adhisayaruban, RRC District Co-ordinator, Vellore.
  • Seven days NSS Special camp was organized from 26.01.2018 to 01.02.2018 at Keelalathur Village. 100 students both boys and Girls participated in the camp. The activities of the special camp were as follows.
  • General Medical Checkup for public in Keelalathur Village.
  • School and temple premises were cleaned properly.
  • Tree plantation was organized at school & temple premises.
  • Special lecture on the topic “ Role of students in Road Safety”.
  • Special lecture on the topic “Disaster Management and Environment protection” was conducted.

FINE ARTS CLUB :

Prof. D.Balaji, Department of English is the convener.

  • Through the Fine Arts club, this year we organized Intra College competitions like, Rangoli, Mehandhi, Face Painting, Pageant show, Solo singing, Group singing, Solo dance, Group dance, Glass painting, Cookery, Flower arrangement, creative craft, Hair dressing, Vegetable carving & pencil sketch and students were give prizes.
  • Separate competitions were conducted for staff members also.

  KMG Quiz -2018 :

  • Every year our college conducts quiz competition as Inter-department competition. This year Prof.J.Srinivasan, Department of Computer Science and Dr.R.Manikandan, Department of BBA are the conveners of KMG Quiz’18. Students from all the departments participated in this competition. Department of Chemistry got the first place, Department of Mathematics and Biochemistry got the second and third places respectively.

CITIZEN CONSUMER CLUB :

  • D.Saravanan, Department of commerce is the convener of this club. The club organized an awareness programme for the students on 14.12.2018. Shri.K.Gunasekaran, Retd. Auditor (Co-operative Department) from Gudiyattam gave a brief lecture on “Awareness about the safety of consumer goods and services and the ways to collect indemnity funds”. About 250 students participated and were benefitted by this programme.

WOMEN’S WELFARE CLUB :

Prof. A.M.Rajalakshmi, Dept. of Microbiology is the convener of this club. Prof. R. Sangeetha, Dept. of Tamil, Prof.S.Seema Dept. of computer Science are the members of this club.

  • Two incinerators have been installed by the Management for the benefit of our girl students. A demonstration about the operation of these incinerators was also organized on 18.07.2017.
  • The club organized an awareness program on ‘Women’s’ Health and development” on 30.01.2018. Dr.K.Latha Lakshmi MBBS DGO MS(OG), Senior Consultant, Indira Nursing Home, Vellore was the chief guest. She gave a special lecture on malnutrition, Personal health, hygiene and cancer. Around 300 girl students and all the women faculty members were benefited by this program.
  • The club in association with confidence organization conducted competition in glass painting, Mehandi and Rangoli. The winners were given prizes.
  • In association with JCI Classic Gudiyattam, JCI Metro Vellore, the club organized a program on “Cancer awareness” on 08.03.2018, towards the celebration of International Women’s Day. Dr.S.Prisicilla sneha latha & Dr.S.Niranajana Suresh were the chief guests. They gave special lecture on Cancer, its types and prevention. Around 200 girl students and all our female staff were benefited by this program.

ROTARACT :

Prof. R.Ramesh, Department of Tamil is the Convener of this club.

  • The Club conducted a mass rally on 20.01.2018 at Ammanankuppam Village in order to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the national commission for women. Nearly 300 students took part in this programme.

YOUTH RED CROSS :

Prof. G.Raghuvarman, Dept. of Biochemistry is the Convener of this club.

  • Our volunteers attended one day YRC study camp at DKM College, Vellore on 24.1.2018
  • On February 10th 2018 Our YRC programme officer attended YRC training camp for programme officers at Thiruvalluvar University Serkadu.
  • Our YRC conducted a one day camp at Pernambut IELC school for mentally retarded kids and fulfilled their needs for this year on02.02.2018
  • On 14.02.2018 Our YRC Conducted a one day camp at Poigai Red Cross old age home and fulfilled some of their needs.
  • Our YRC conducted a one day camp at St Anne’s Old age home at Gudiyattam On 14th February 2018 and extended our support to them.
  • Three of our YRC Volunteers attended three days YRC study camp at Thiruvalluvar University from 21st February to 23rd February 2018.

IQAC:
A Faculty Development Programme on ‘Placement Methodology, Maintaining Quality Assurance in Academic System’ was conducted for the staff members on 24.03.2018. Prof. Dr.Jagathi, Department of Microbiology, Sri Akilandeswari women’s College, Vandavasi, and Prof. J. Srinivasan, Dept. of Computer Science, KMG College of Arts & Science, Gudiyattam were the speakers.

PLACEMENT CELL :

On behalf of our college Placement Cell, many activities related to placement were conducted by Placement Officers Prof. L.Sankar Ganesh & Dr.S.Chacko Vijai Sharma, during the academic year 2017-2018.

  • The Universal Higher Education Trust, VIT organized ‘Project Shine” a six month skill cum placement training in association with ‘Aspire Systems India Pvt Ltd.,” our students P.Selvi-BCA B.Subreen-BCA and M.Keerthana – CS, were selected for this project.
  • Our M.Sc., Chemistry and M.Com students participated in online test of Sanmar Group of Companies” Chennai on 28th December 2017 and five of them were selected for the final HR Interview.
  • In collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development ‘The Tamil Nadu Maanila Ooraga Vazhvadhara Iyakkam (State Rural Livelihood support Movement) conducted an awareness programme ‘Koushal Panjee’ (skill register programme) on 17th January 2018. All UG & PG final year students from various departments of our college were benefited.
  • Campus drives were organized in our college in association with reputed companies. Through these companies 20 students got placed in Eureka Forbes Pvt Ltd., 47 students got placed in IDBI Federal life Insurance Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore 138 students got placed in Health Care BPO, Chennai and 3 students placed in AGS, Vellore.
  • Totally 208 students got placed this year. Many reputed companies are yet to come shortly.

Our college is one of the full fledged research institute in the rural area, which is providing higher education to the poor and middle class rural students at an affordable cost. I thank the Management for helping the poor students of this area to convert their aspirations into achievements.
