The Department of Chemistry was established in the year: 2007

The knowledge of basic science is essential for the sustainable development of the society. To get the basic knowledge in chemical science to young students the Department of Chemistry initiated in the academic year 2007-2008. The objective of our department is to motivate students to excel in chemistry at the global level, which is necessary for chemists getting placement as well as becoming an entrepreneur in future. The department was uplifted as the post graduate department in the year 2010-2011.

The department has been recognized as a research department since 2014-15 to offer M.Phil., Followed that the Thiruvallur University accorded recognition to the Department as a centre for Doctoral research in Chemistry from 2019-2020. The focus of the department is the holistic development of the students and involve them in curricular and co-curricular activities. The Chemistry Department pledges itself to serve in the broadest, innovative and most liberal manner towards the advancement of chemistry in all of its branches through academics, research and service missions upholding the values and entrepreneurial skills.

The job potential to the chemist is very high now and opportunities to provoke research in chemistry are ample. Needless to say that for a developing country likes ours, “CHEMISTRY IS OUR LIFE AND FUTURE”.

• To develop a basic knowledge in Chemistry with practical experience.
• To kindle the interest of students towards the development of technical skills to start their own business through mini projects and in-plant training.
• To enhance the students with the capacity of application oriented skills, which is a gateway to professional chemists.

Eligibility

Candidates for admission to the first year of the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry shall be required to have passed in the Higher Secondary Examinations (Academic or Vocational stream) conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu with Chemistry as a subject or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereto by the Governing Body of KMG College of Arts and Science (Autonomous), Gudiyatham subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed.

a. Sample Analysis

• We have basic soil analysis test like pH measurement and electrolyte quantification through conductivity measurement in our laboratory.
• The pH of water analyze using pH meter.
• The heavy metal contamination tested with the help of UV – Visible spectrophotometer.
• Hardness of water estimated by complexometric titration.

b. Concept Understanding

• We used Chemistry models for understand the concepts.
• Multimedia Class room (ICT tools) used for better teaching learning method.
• Quiz programme conducted for department students to enhance their knowledge.
• We conduct Seminars and Conferences to develop current status of Chemistry.
• Gust lecture are organized for the student knowledge gaining.
• The Chemistry Association has been working for the multi skill development of our students through several programmes.

Eligibility

A candidate who has passed the B.Sc. Degree Examination with Chemistry as the main subject of study of any UGC recognized University or an Examination of any University accepted by the as equivalent thereto by the Governing Body of KMG College of Arts and Science (Autonomous), Gudiyatham as equivalent thereto shall be eligible for admission to the M.Sc. Degree in Chemistry.

The PG and Research Department of Chemistry have an association in the name of CHEMISTY ASSOCIATION. The major theme of our association is to develop the student’s skills in curricular and extracurricular activities. It has a student team to run the functions, each academic year we have an inauguration function in that time we introduce the in-charges of the association. One faculty is guiding the student team, among the chemistry students we selected the following positions, President, Vice - President, Secretary and two Join Secretaries. These student incharges is conduction various programmes throughout the academic year, like QUIZ, CHEM-FEST, Paper Presentation, Essay Writing, Elocution, Guest Lectures and etc., Finally we honor the with the winners in the association valedictory function.
